FAQ

Questions

What can it read?

The spines of books, DVDs, Blu-rays, VHS tapes, CDs, records, cassettes and video games, on shelves, in boxes and crates seen from above, and in piles. Every spine that faces the camera counts, up to well over a hundred in one photo.

How accurate is it?

Usually very, on a sharp photo taken close up and straight on. Worn, tiny or decorative lettering is harder; those spines are marked so you can check them by hand, and "Look closer" gives a single spine a second, more careful read. The in-app photo tips show what helps most.

Are the values real prices?

They're estimates from what copies are listed for on eBay right now, in your currency. They don't know the condition of your copy, fees or postage, so treat them as a guide. Every title also links straight to eBay's sold listings so you can check.

What happens to my photos?

They're used only to read the spines. Your photo goes to our server and to OpenAI's AI service, only after you allow it in the app. We don't keep it, OpenAI doesn't train on it and deletes it within 30 days, and location data is removed first. Your scans stay on your phone.

Do I need an account?

No. Install it and scan. Your scans, collection and hunt list live on your phone.

What counts as a scan?

One photo. A batch of 5 photos of a long shelf is 5 scans. "Look closer" on a single spine counts as half a scan. Scans that fail on our side don't count.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. Spinely is coming to iPhone first.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions run through Apple: open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions. You keep your plan until the end of the period you paid for.
